Catalog Drool

Featherbrained Jing is starting a new regular column. It's called Catalog Drool. Jing gets a catalog in the mail, she opens it, and she drools over things she wants but probably won't immediately get. Today's catalog came in the mail yesterday, CB2, which Featherbrained Jing supposes is the Crate and Barrel for the younger set.

The Go Cart Desk and Filing Cabinet. Each piece is sold individually for around $150. Jing would push the cabinet beneath the desk. It's durable, metal, and Jing won't mess up the finish when she spills, as she often does. Nice way to add color and modernity to an otherwise more classically or mission style room.

The Acacia Mini Barr at $399. It's fully functional and compact. Plus the wood finish is extra handsome. Now, Jing has a built in oak bar in her apartment but if she didn't, this would be a must have. Guests would love this little bar and what a space saver!

The Chirp pillow is $29.95 which, like most throw pillows. is completely overpriced especially because they're very hard to clean (rarely with removable and washable covers). This one is ultra cute, modern, and hand made seeming. Hard to resist. It would look oh so lovely with all the oak accents in Jing's apartment.

There's enough glass and cocktail wear in Jing's home to keep a bar running, any day of the week. One thing there isn't, however, are stemless wine glasses (for $1.95-$2.95 a piece). Jing loves a steamless glass. There's something oddly sensual about a rounded stemless glass filled with rich red wine. Seeing it sit in the palm, as opposed to delicately held by the stem, is refreshing and easier.

Every Day Wear, Comfy not Shlumpy

Long time, no post. Featherbrained Jing had her quasi step kids in town for a while and writing here was not priority number 1. But she's back. Featherbrained Jing would like to spend this post covering non-couture, non-runway, clothing. Jing has been thinking a lot about her late 20s style evolution which is marked by a move away from the disposable and the single investment piece and towards a comfortable, easy to wear, and slightly bohemian apparel. In a basic since: Jing is no longer a bad ass. Everyday wear can be cozy, stylish, and appealing. Let's go!

Silk Tiered Dress-Garnet Hill-$128
So Easy in flattering colors and oh so soft silky fabric. Featherbrained Jing prefer this for casual daily dressing, with flip flops (non grimy) or simple leather thong sandals. Jewelry? Delicate metal necklace or simply bracelet. Small earrings.

Garnet Hill Fine Gauge Knit Geometric Neckline Dress-$88
This is terribly simply and exceedingly bohemian. Featherbrained Jing loves it with hair tied back, maybe with head elastic in vibrant color. Paired with simple earrings, cropped legging, and simple show. Elegant! She looks like she works at a gallery.

Chan Lu Embroidered Tote-$199
Featherbrained Jing has never met a tot bag that she didn't love. In fact, featherbrained often prefers tots to nice leather bags. It may be Jing's most serious fashion faux pas but, she can't help it. She loves the tote. Chan Lu makes fabulously crafted, crafty totes all hand made in patching, embroidery, and specialized treatments. They are pricey but well worth the investment. Jing will invest one of these days. The design below is not my favorites but you get the idea. I wouldn't pass up the green/blue combo however.

Velvet (brand) Printed Smock Tunic-$99
There's nothing better than a wardrobe stocked with comfortable tunics to throw over jeans, leggings, even a longer skirt. Keep it simple with accessories, because this big print should be the focus point. I'd love to see it paired with a black/white LL Bean canvas beach tote. The Black/White Cavas tote would act as a simple touch to a rather embellished tunic.

Clarks (Brand) Leather Thong Sandal-$40
Featherbrained Jing discovered Clarks Footwear while studying in England as an undergraduate. Clarks consistently makes ultra comfortable footwear in stylish and/or artsy motifs. Here, they've made us a leather thong sandal with their patented comfort sole. Not your tragically flat, uncomfortable thong. Also, they offer a huge selection of muted, but vibrant, tones.

...More to come.
All items can be purchased at garnethill.com OR you can look for the Clarks, the Velvet Tunic, and the Chan Lu totes at the respective websites for those companies.

Dior Couture: The New, New Look

In 1947, America Post-War, Dior introduced what he called the "Caroline Look," only to be renamed by journalists, The New Look. The look is characterized by a nipped waist line, full skirt, and structure form fitting bodice. It was, a rejection of the more masculine, "hard" designs of war time America when women were replacing men in the work force and designers, inspired by this turn of events, created looks that were labor-ready. Dior has since reinvented this look many times over, but not in such a focused, modern way as we now see in the Dior Couture 2008 show. Featherbrained Jing was impressed, very impressed. This Dior "New Look" is very modern, obviously sexy, borderline naughty.

Galliano opened the show with a clear message: The New Look is back. But, look at the hard edges; raunchy shoes, big black binding belt, ultra modern sleeves, and black lips. The New Look Woman is back with a vengeance!

Before the New Look, Dior and others, designed the flapper look, and then the streamlined slipped look of the 1940s. Here, the skirt is a sheer slip to reveal modest, but sexy, undies.

Classic Silhouette but ultra sexy, S&M with a wink and a nod, on a rather gender bending model.

One of the star looks of the show! Layers and Layers of tulle lace all gathered at a nipped New Look waist, awesomely paired with translucent heeled booties.

Just Divine! A New Look evening gown in lace appliqued sheer tulle. Yes, there's a reason Couture costs this much! Charlize Theron, a stalwart Dior supporter, would look excellent in this dress.

Danielle Steel inspired Dior New Look dress. Va va voom! Ba dunk dunk. The model looks modern because she's vuluptuous, bawdy, and ready to strut.

Featherbrained Jing's hero, John Galliano, the man behind the collection. Jing wants to walk the runway with him on her side.

Armani Prive Collection (Fall 2008 Couture)

Armani Prive should come with a warning: "All of the Gowns will be worn by Katie Holmes, Beyonce, or Cate Blanchett." And that's the truth. I took a look back at the last couture collection and most of the gowns, in some way or another, have been worn by one of three. Beyonce wears the tacky, overly adorned, sparkly, and bias cut dresses. Katie wears the more structural, classic peices. Cate gets the avante garde peices, if there are any. Cate likes to make a dramatic entrance and Featherbrained Jing loves her for it. So, let's take a look, and "pull" the looks and guess who will be wearing them. Shall we?

CATE! She loves a higher, funky, waistline. She also loves more mature looks and often wears the jewelry worn by the models at the show.

KATIE! She loves a low dip because it compliments her small bust and long & lean frame.

Katie! She loves preppie and this is a sparkly preppie ball gown. Debutant Ball!

Beyonce! She's loves a two tone dress, especially one that is cleavage enhancing.

Cate! She loves more handsome pieces and this tailored gown is perfect for her.

Beyonce! She's never met a one shouldered dress she didn't love. Trust me.

Katie! She loves silky slip dresses that have structure.

Beyonce! She knows this dress will conceal those hips and butt with is wrap around effect.

Katie. It's classic, clean, and practically has her name on it.

Katie and Cate! They'll have to fight it out. Both love this silhoutte, but I think this may look a little better on the lithe Katie.

Jordyn is Fabulous

So, Gawker posted Little Miss Jordyn singing High School Musical's Fabulous live from her pool. As Gawker notes, Jordyn is extremely productive, having posted 50 videos of herself on Youtube by age 6 and all. Wowsers! Featherbrained Jing watched this video 5 times, before checking out some of the other breathtaking work of Jordyn. While some at Gawker, are highly critical of the young lassie's family, I must say that Jordyn is f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s. Sure, the hair extensions and seemingly endless number of Disney princess dress in her possession is ridonk, and not something that Featherbrained Jing as Social Worker (her day job) would condone. But, come on? She's got it and at age 6 is a better singer than Britney. What I really thing she needs, is a stylist, and not one of the Disney variety. Every 6 year old needs a stylist---so hire me, parents of Jordyn!

Fashion Disaster Strikes Vogue's 20th Anniversary Party in Spain!

Europe! Vogue! Spanish Women! Sensuality! All the makings of fabulous trend making and breaking dressing, right? Well, no. Featherbrained Jing went through the images taken at last night's Ball and it appears that gaudy struck, and it struck big time. Save for a few fantastic looks; there were mainly errors of enormous proportions. Featherbrained Jing was unable to acquire all imagesof the best of the worst. So, you're only getting mild bad here. Let's look, shall we.

Jing is torn with this one. On one hand, it looks easy, breezy, stylish. It's neat, and clean, with a punch of color. Paulino Rubio looks very comfortable and thus is radiating good energy and glow. On the other hand, since someone decided that yellow would be the color of the season, everyone and their mother is out to show how they can pull off yellow. It's a bit too much. Also, Jing typically believes (see below), that one should not wear punch or jewel colors in classic silhouttes. Paulino Rubio gets away with it because the dress is looong, and slouchy, making it modern.

Penelope's sister, Monica Cruz, looks good but rather "blah," especially for a Vogue event. Vogue events should be used for stretching the style barriers. We've seen the one ring halter dress a million times. Perhaps she likes to go understated because she knows she's B-list, and she'll always be Penelop'es sister. Featherbrained Jing can respect that and certainly thinks there is a time and place for such protocol but this isn't her sister's movie opening and the event is in her home country. She should have rocked out more.

Featherbrained jing loves this number which she thinks is a Valli froke from the last collection. It's fantastic. The only way to do jewel or punch colors well is to go very modern in design, and refrain from wearing a classic silhouette. Valli is tres post-modern in his silhouettes. Classic Silhouettes in punch colors end up looking very Jessica McClintock.

Carmen Electra? Britney Spears? No! It's "designer" Jade Jaggear. Jade, you will continue to not be taken seriously for as long as you wear dresses from Leo's Dancewear. From Jade Jaggear's Jezebel collection-Which says it all, really.

Claudia Schiffer wearing a tuxedo slash little bow peep ensemble. Claudia has a reputation for being the "stupid" model but I expect more from her. This looks like it could have been in the film 27 Dresses, as one of the ugly bridesmaid numbers. Chanel Spring 2008-Not surprising. Jing and Chanel have not been getting along as of late.

Hot model Leticia Casta is another close call. Jing likes the mumu glide of this dress. The color (jewel/punch) works well in a modern mumu shape. The jewel motif at the top is simply not working. It's very dance costume, very cheapo looking and almost, dare Jing say, like something one would see trimming a top at Cache?

Laura Ponte is chic x 10 here. She's the only style icon of the evening. Jing adores the pattern on the shoulders and arms of the blouse, and the wide leg easy pants. Very, very god. Laura's expression is priceless---She can't believe what the others are wearing around her. She wants to go home.

If Laura Ponte was going to hang out with anyone that evening, it would be Paz Vega. They are totally the chicest women at the event and just happen to be embracing the large floral pattern trend but in very different ways. Patterns are so awesome when used sparingly in evening wear. Paz looks effortlessly cool. Jing hopes that dress has pockets which would make it even more cool. Is this Prada? Maybe. Nope. It's Cavalli Pre-Fall 2008.

*Jing will update with designer info when it comes in. Updated to include some fashion info.

Custom Shirts: The New but Old fashioned Luxury

In Featherbrained Jing's parent's day, and certainly grandparent's day, being able to afford custom made tailored shirts, for work or leisure, was the sign of wealth (old and new). Gradually, custom shirts waned in popularity amongst the upper middle class. In part, this is because dress codes have been relaxed and many men and women don't wear tailored shirts every day, never mind having them custom made! Brooks Brothers makes a Non-Iron shirt that is the staple of many men's wardrobes including the man in Jing's house. They are not custom made to collar, cuff, fabric and sizing specification but they do not wrinkle. Ever. And trust me, Jing is quite the laundress! But Featherbrained Jing has thought a lot about custom made shirts lately. They can be fun (1) Pick out a wild print! (2) Size it correctly! (3) Order custom blended fabric! Ah, luxury. Whoopi Goldberg has been wearing custom shirts all year long on THE VIEW. You can't miss 'em. They are brightly patterned and perfectly fit. So, Featherbrained as searched the web to find custom shirt options. Yes, you could go to Pink tomorrow and get a custom shirt. Featherbrained is thinking more creatively here, and looking for places that offer services for women and a variety of vibrant fabrics.

1. Many fabric stores make custom shirts even if they don't advertise it. For example, Jill Zarin, from the Real Housewives of New York City, whose husband owns Zarin Fabrics has stated that they will custom make a shirt from ANY fabric in their store. You have to call, though. They don't offer the service online.

2. Mytailor.com is an impressive site with tons of fabric and pattern choices! They tend to offer Men's styles but women are welcome to enter in their measurements and will get a shirt that fits, just don't expect any feminine seaming towards the bust or waist. If you are more slender with a smaller chest, this is a good option! Mytailor also offers custom slacks for men.

3. Tailor Cut is very similar to MyTailor but they have many shirt suggestions for women. They have a line called the "trend" collection and will make a big blousey sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, banded sleeve, sculpted bodice etc.

4. Lord Willies is a swank shop in lower Manhattan, two locations, which makes shirt from English fabrics. Very preppie! Very cozy! This is design oriented shop but you have to call to order or go in person. The customer service is supposedly spectacular.
